Today the UnitedHealthcare Memorial Challenge featured a 52-mile trek from Williamsburg to Ft. Lee highlighted by visits to Williamsburg’s historic downtown and our first ever visit to Ft. Lee.
Our ride into historic Williamsburg at the Liberty Lounge, a haven for those who have served our country, on Duke of Gloucester Street, where we were welcomed with remarks by Williamsburg Mayor Paul Frieling and historic figure Brigadier General Peter Muilenburg from the Continental Army.
We headed west, riding through the beautiful forested Virginia countryside and arrived at Ft. Lee to end our ride at DeCA, the Defense Commissary Agency. The soldiers of Ft. Lee lined the road and the employees of DeCA including Michael Dowling, the COO of DECA and Colonel Michael Townsend from Ft. Lee greeted the warriors and hosted a nice party to wrap up the Challenge. The event was supported by longtime Project Hero partner Bill Curry from Pepsi.
The 2018 UnitedHealthcare Memorial Challenge marked the 60th Challenge delivering the peer to peer support and physical activity healing to our riders that is our hallmark. Our thanks go to our enthusiastic volunteers, outstanding supporting sponsors and all our riders for making the Challenge such a success. Special recognition to Marcus Jones, a retired Virginia State Patrol officer for continuing to fight in his health struggles and still found time to organize the great police support for the entire Challenge.
