2018 UnitedHealthcare California Challenge Blog Day 2

UNITEDHEALTHCARE CALIFORNIA COASTALCHALLENGE

DAY 2 BLOG

Our second day of the 2018 UnitedHealthcare California Coastal Challenge embodied the reason we call these rides “Challenges”: the 92+-mile trek from Carmel through Big Sur and into Cambria today brought out the best in our riders.

On a trek that featured daunting climbs, thrilling descents and incredible scenery, the Project Hero family did itself proud today as we rode along the coast.

Our departure from Carmel took us through beautiful deep green forest roads as we emerged onto the coast.  Following the twisting ribbon of Highway 1 we traversed the famed Bixby Creek Bridge and took in some of the most incredible vistas the Golden State has to offer.  Riding through Big Sur in bright sunshine with a light breeze, our Project Hero peloton was an impressive sight as we climbed together and flew down the numerous descents that highlight the highway.  As unforgettable as 17-mile drive was yesterday, today’s ride with its spectacular vistas and demanding riding was a unique and ideal achievement for our Project Hero family.

With Hearst Castle on our left and beaches filled with sunbathing sea lions on our right, we finished with a pleasant flat ride along the coast into San Simeon and Cambria.  The day was completed by another tasty dinner hosted by our friends of the American Legion in Cambria highlighted by an unforgettable birthday celebration for our great friend and superb Project Hero rider Frank Dominguez.  Frank, we will never forget the endearing, hilarious sight of you going “all in” on that birthday cake and we hope you get all the frosting out of your hair!

Tomorrow our journey continues with a 54 mile ride and one of Project Hero’s favorite traditional visits as the 2018 UnitedHealthcare California Costal Challenge comes to Pismo Beach.
